Black Bear Mountain

 BLACK BEAR MOUNTAIN

Black Bear Mountain is the longest hike of the Fulton Chain Trifecta.  The trailhead for Black Bear Mountain is about 10 miles outside of Old Forge, just off NY Route 28 between Eagle Bay and Inlet.  There is plenty of parking available in a lot that is shared with the Rocky Mountain trailhead.  Please note that although both mountains share a parking lot there are two separate and unique trailheads.

The Black Bear Mountain trail has two options — a steep route around 1.9 miles each way or a more gradual ascent around 3.1 miles each way.  Both trails share the trailhead.  The trails split at about the .7 mile mark.  Bear right for the steeper, shorter route or continue straight for the longer route.

Both trails leading to the summit are very well used and easy to follow. Black Bear offers some great views of the Fulton Chain of Lakes and on a clear day, you can even see the high peaks to the northeast.  The summit is rocky and open and is a great place to take a break or have a picnic.
